Backward or reverse rotation of the ball in flight
BACKSWING
Initial movement before the stroke taking the racquet backwards in a loop or straight-back
BASELINE
The line which marks the official length of the court
BREAK POINT
Advantage of a point which a player has to break his opponent´s serve
CENTERLINE
Central line dividing the service boxes and also the smaller mark that bisects the baseline
CONTINENTAL GRIP
Generally used for drive or forehand, so called because it was developped in the "continent" of Europe. It favored serve and volley players
CONTRAPIE
Opposite direction taken by a player who goes to look for a shot which really is going the other way.
CROSSCOURT SHOT
Diagonal shot crossing all the court
CHANGEOVER
Changing ends of the court after every odd game. You have 90 seconds to make the changeover
CHIP
A soft dipping shot with back spin which falls near the net obliging the attacking rival to volley up. It is generally used to return a serve
CHOP
A stroke with heavy backspin making the ball go back after bouncing
DINK
Similar shot to chip, not bouncing much, generally used in doubles to return serve
DEUCE
Score in which both sides get to 40 all
DOUBLE FAULT
When you fail to place either of two serves in play
DRIVE VOLLEY
Volley played with a longer swing than the normal short volley movement
DROPSHOT
A delicate shot usually played with slice so that the ball falls very near the net and bounces low
DROP VOLLEY
The same as dropshot but hit off a volley, generally near the net
EASTERN GRIP
A strong groundstroking grip developped in eastern USA, generally used for shots from the baseline, with different hand positions for forehand and backhand
FAST COURTS
Courts with fast surfaces where the ball bounces faster and lower than in others (i.e.: grass, wood, cement)
FLAT BACKSWING
Prepare the stroke taking the racquet backwards in a straight way. Opposed to a loop or circular backswing

Tiro desde el fondo de la cancha que supera al jugador que fue a la red, por cualquiera de los dos lados
PELOTA PESADA
La potencia del impacto unido al efecto que se le da a la pelota hace que la pelota "pese" para el adversario. Por eso es más difícil de contestar que una pegada en forma normal

SET
El jugador que obtiene seis juegos con una diferencia de dos sobre su adversario (o quien gane un tie break luego de empatar en seis games) en el caso de sets cortos se adjudica un "set". En algunos torneos, como los Grand Slam, el quinto set se juega "largo" donde obligatoriamente debe existir una diferencia de dos games (ej.: 15-13)
SET BALL (PELOTA DE SET)
El tanto que se realiza cuando falta un sólo punto para que un jugador gane el set
SMASH
Golpe que se realiza de arriba hacia abajo, con un movimiento similar al servicio, generalmente en respuesta a un globo del rival. Puede utilizarse desde cualquier lugar de la cancha
STOP-VOLLEY (VOLEA MUERTA)
Cuando se pega de volea y se deja la pelota muy cerca de la red, sin fuerza
TIERRA DE NADIE
El sector de la cancha entre la línea de base y la de servicio. No es un lugar recomendable para posicionarse

La acción de lanzar la pelota hacia arriba con la mano libre en el inicio del servicio

Area situada en la mitad de la cancha formada por la unión de las líneas de saque y la línea central
TENNIS ELBOW
Lesión en el codo producida por varias razones, entre ellas una empuñadura inadecuada, mala técnica, fatiga muscular por exceso de juego, etc. También llamada epicondilitis.

TIE BREAK (DESEMPATE RAPIDO)
En los torneos en que se aplica este sistema luego de empatar en seis games, se realiza un desempate rápido denominado tie break. El ganador es el que primero llega a 7 puntos con un margen de dos. Comienza efectuando un servicio el jugador que debía sacar y luego servirán dos veces cada uno en forma alternada. El sistema completo es el siguiente:
-Cuando llegan a 6-6, el jugador al que le toca servir realiza el primer saque para el primer punto del tie break
-A continuación, su rival tendrá dos saques y a partir de allí cada uno sacará dos veces en forma alternativa para llegar a los 7 puntos (o los necesarios hasta conseguir la ventaja de dos tantos)
-Los saques comienzan hacia el lado derecho de la cancha (el primer punto) y luego alternando el izquierdo y el derecho hasta culminar el tie break
-Se cambiará de lado cada 6 puntos y al finalizar el tie break
-El tie break se cuenta como un game para el cambio de balls
-En el siguiente game luego de un tie break el jugador que sirvió primero en el desempate rápido será quien reciba el saque de su rival

Golpe de la pelota sin que ésta toque el suelo. Generalmente se realiza sin backswing, con un movimiento corto y cerca de la red aunque puede realizarse más alejada de ésta
